The workload is heavy, the outlook uncertain, and the pay sits below market rate. I have been thinking about changing jobs for a long time.
Earlier this week, I finally had an interview. When it was over, the interviewer smiled and saw me out. Was that simple courtesy—or genuine interest? The more I thought about it on the way home, the heavier I felt. By half past six, I was hungry anyway. Better to switch on the oven, feed myself first, and leave the rest for later.
I cut frozen puff pastry into thin strips, wrapped them around chicken cocktail sausages, added nothing extra, and baked them at 180°C until golden.
I had meant to use the waiting time to replay the interview in detail, from my preparation to every answer. But as the pastry rose and the smell of butter filled the kitchen, my mind went quiet. I let them cool slightly, took a bite, and there it was—savoury, crisp, flaky and deeply satisfying.
Some good things need not be laboured over.
Job hunting, I suppose, is much the same. If they want me, I will hear from them in time. If they do not, nothing I do tonight will change that. Since the outcome is not mine to control, why let it spoil dinner too?
“That smells amazing. Can you bring some into the room?”
My wife was hungry too.
The result can wait. Good food cannot.
