Berkshire in May. Past eight o'clock, and the sky is still bright. A walk after dinner feels rather pleasant.
It is the season when the horse chestnuts come into flower. In the twilight, as the branches stir, the white clusters seem to flicker like candlelight, hence the nickname, candle blossoms.
The most well-known horse chestnut is probably Anne Frank's tree. It stood in Amsterdam, beside the house where the Frank family lived in hiding. The diary mentions it more than once: bare in February, budding in April, and candle-bright in May.
In 2010, the tree came down in a storm. Its seeds were sent across the world and planted in different places.
London has one, in Highbury Fields, Islington.
Berkshire does not.
No great cause for lament. The candle blossoms along the road are blooming all the same.
Home from the walk. There is still a call to join.
Berkshire in May. Nine o'clock, and the sky has not quite gone dark. A few of us sit in front of our screens.
"For the June Fourth vigil, how do we make the candlelight stand out?"
Back in Hong Kong, we never had this worry. We only feared no one would come. Now, such a worry could no longer exist there. Only the fear that someone might gather.
No great cause for lament.
The candle blossoms will bloom, in time.
