I'm working three jobs.
The first is the proper one: running social media for a hotel group — answering guest enquiries, organising events, taking photos, shooting videos. Carrying on that proud Hong Kong tradition of servitude: nine to five, worked like a dog.
On Sunday afternoons I do casual shifts for the pest-control company I used to work for. The work could not be simpler — drafting contracts, raising invoices, updating the website; copy, paste, change two words. Most of the time is really spent nattering with old colleagues; call it visiting friends once a week.
Lately I've given away my Saturday nights too, helping out at a pub. Collecting glasses, pulling pints, mixing the odd drink — nothing you can't learn by watching. But the pay is decent: seventy-odd pounds for a few hours. There's a live band every week, the atmosphere is good, the regulars are a laugh. Honestly, it's rather enjoyable.
So why on earth would I take a job at a pub?
Because last month my pub bill came to eight hundred pounds. The money isn't the real problem. Divide it by five pounds a pint, then by thirty days, and it works out at more than five pints a day, nearly every day. The Saturday shift earns a little pocket money — and, more to the point, keeps me on the wrong side of the bar.
Some friends, I know, worry about me — afraid I only know how to earn, and have forgotten to live. In truth there is still time for other things. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays I get up early for a run. A little reading after work each night. Saturdays I still sleep till noon; Sunday evenings are for walks, the cinema, writing.
A timetable filled like this is, of course, exhausting.
Sometimes, when the tiredness sets in, a long stretch and a yawn.
A good view on a walk, and I will stop and stand a while.
At the end of each night, a hot shower; a cup of tea, an episode of something.
Best of all, sleep arrives deep and steady, night after night.
A party of one, it turns out, is still a party.
